Fruit or Chaff

June 16, 2019 Preacher: Pastor Pete Hoglund Series: Summer in the Psalms

Topic: Happiness Scripture: Psalm 1:1–1:6

Everyday cows make five gallons of milk, eat 110 pounds of food and drink a bathtub of water. Cows are ruminants. They chew their meal more than once.

Just as cows are ruminants, the Christian is to be a ruminant of Scripture. The Christian is to read, ruminate, reflect and process the Word of God and be formed by what He has said.

Over the next few months Emmanuel will be spending Summer in the Psalms, specifically Psalm 1-41 (Book 1)

“It has been said by church historians that in those periods of Christian history where renewal, revival, and awakening took place and the church was at its strongest, that coincidental with those periods in church history, there was a strong focus on the psalms in the life of God’s people–particularly in the worship of God’s people.” R.C. Sproul

Are you looking for spiritual renewal for yourself, your family or your church? Is your leaf withering? Consider the Psalms.

Psalm 1 instructs that a happy and prosperous person delights in God’s word but the wicked perish. Blessed, happy is the person who does not walk in the ways of the world but who has intentionally planted themselves next to and in God’s word. (1:1-3). The person who spends time with God in His word has His perspective and is blessed because of it. This wisdom Psalm clearly delineates the blessing of walking with God and the destruction of those who snub their nose at God’s commands. (4-6)

His delight is in the law of the Lord and on God’s law the man of God mediates day and night. (1:2)…For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous but the way of the wicked will perish. (vs.6)

I invite you to walk into the Psalms with us this summer.

Will you ruminate on Psalm 1 and consider and pursue the Life available to all who meditate on the Word of God?
