The Easter Story

To read the story of Easter in the Bible, go to Matthew 28Mark 16Luke 24, or John 20.

On Easter we celebrate that Jesus Christ rose from the dead and what this victory means for us. "He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee: 'The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.'" (Luke 24:6-7 NIV)

Jesus was killed on a Friday almost two thousand years ago (read about Good Friday here), but he did not stay dead; the Sunday afterward he came back to life and lived on earth among people until going up into heaven 40 days later. "After his suffering, he showed himself to these men and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God." (Acts 1:3 NIV) Jesus proved by his resurrection (returning to life) that he has the power over life and death, and he lives still today and forever.

What Easter Means for Us Today

(Saved from Death to Life)

To everyone who believes Jesus is who he says he is (God and man), believes that he died on the cross to pay the price for our sin/ rebellion against God, believes in Jesus's resurrection from the dead, and commits to love and serve God and follow his commands, God gives eternal life, freedom, victory over sin and death, peace with God, and joy that cannot be taken away. This is what it means to be saved - we are saved from the punishment we deserve (eternal suffering in hell and separation from God) and are given eternal life with God, a life of peace, joy, victory, and freedom we can experience even now. "If you declare with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved." (Romans 10:9 NIV) "For sin is the sting that results in death [...] But thank God! He gives us victory over sin and death through our Lord Jesus Christ." (1 Cor. 15:56-57 NLT)
