Principles in Suffering for Living Hope

This world is not our home nor are we to endure our sufferings without cause. Suffering is a part of the human experience not doubt but, the follower of Christ is expected respond to the why and the how differently. Although the pain of suffering may cause fear, anger, hurt or despair when we understand why we suffer, the Christian can respond in faith because we know it is for our testing (1 Peter 4:12). We should not be surprised at our trials as we “share in the sufferings of Christ. ” (13) Our view of eternity and the temporary status on earth helps us to endure as well as respond in faith (Romans 8:18-27) and it is to refine us as gold in a furnace as we suffer for Christ (1:6-7; Prov.  27:21).  As we are associated with Him we are blessed because we know that the Spirit of God rests on us (14) and this suffering brings glory to God (16). Our testing and purification is for our good but that is not to say it is easy. (17-18). As we walk this journey of faith we are to trust our Faithful Creator while we do what is right (19). He is the sovereign Creator and holds all things in His hands. Nothing is hidden from His sight and He is absolutely trustworthy, reliable and dependable as He guides and provides for our every need. Regardless of the breadth, depth and duration of the pain, God’s all powerful and compassionate eyes are on us. “Therefore, let those who suffer according to God’s will entrust their souls to a faithful Creator while doing good.” (4:19)
