The Glory of the Anointed

The Glory of the Anointed

Psalm 2

“The psalms, like no other literature, lift us to a position where we can commune with God, capturing a sense of the greatness of his kingdom and a sense of what living with him for eternity will be like.”

― Gordon Fee

Scholars believe that Psalm 1 and 2, coupled together serve as an introduction of sorts to the whole Psalter. Psalms without question is the most famous prayer book for all Christendom and as Fee suggests provides a language with which we can more aptly communion with God.

Psalm 2 articulates the challenge, supremacy and worship of Christ. But the passage was a royal psalm in the Old Testament and therefore was used by the Davidic kings.

Although this Psalm contextually is written to the surrounding pagan nations David’s words implore us today as we too are like kings and rulers who take our stand against the Lord and His Anointed (2:1). But we must fight to remember that God is not a bondage bringer but a bondage breaker (Luke 4:17-19). Ultimately, Psalm 2 was fulfilled in Christ, a promise made to David in 2 Samuel 7:16 (see Hebrews 12:22-24)

Jesus is supreme and as the author of Hebrews quotes Psalm 2, they establish the fulfillment of Scripture through Christ (Hebrews 1:1-5). All nations are His (Ps 2:8) as has always been the plan first given in 2 Samuel, referred to in Luke and proclaimed in Revelation (11:15).

As we ruminate on His rightful Throne and our place before Him, we are called to be wise and warned (2:10-12). As a result therefore we worship and serve him with gladness and fear.

Do you see Jesus as a bondage bringer or bondage breaker?

Are you seeking to embrace Christ or throw Him off?

Is He supreme in your affections and life?

Will you serve Him with gladness and fear?
