Where Living Hope Begins

Preacher: Pastor Pete Hoglund Series: Living Hope Topic: Hope Scripture: 1 Peter 1:1–11

In today’s world where our news feeds are a constant static of bad news, the air of good news and hope breathes life. If pressed, the general population can come up with a definition of the ethereal concepts of love or faith but a definition of hope may be a little more elusive. We know when we have hope and we know when we don’t. But, what it is? In the apostle Peter’s first letter he expresses profound praise for God choosing the believer and giving them a “living hope.”

Simply put, Peter defines hope as: “A forward looking confidence to that which is good and beneficial.” Because our hope begins with God choosing us and providing faith to be in relationship with Him, and because this hope is based on the resurrection of Christ, Peter rejoices in this hope that is “living”. Ours is not a dead hope or a trivial hope. Our reality is not just what this world offers but our present and eternity is secure based on the person and work of Jesus Christ.

Our living hope begins with God and is grounded in the resurrection (1 Peter 1:1-5) produces praise through trials (6-9) and was foretold by the prophets (10-12).

How would you define hope and what is your hope truly in?
